both samples sound like something taken from a movie - the first is a bit klezmer (yiddishe), the second a bit western-tinged.

ouha, that's a very tough one, VR.
at first sight i would say it has its roots in russian/cossack folklore, hence the balalaika sound. made me think a bit of the 'casatschok' dance by dimitri dourakine's orchestra, popular in our region ca.1969.
